Spam, spam and more spam

No I am not talking about that canned meat that our parents and grandparents used to eat, and apparently are now available in different flavours.

What is spam and how do I avoid my emails going into spam?

This has been an increasing subject of conversation at the office over recent weeks so we thought it was time for a series of blogs. As there is quite a bit of information I am splitting it over 3 blog posts.

What is Spam?

Generally it is unsolicited emails sent for commercial purposes. There are many legitimate email sales campaigns that work well. But there are more spammers who harvest recipient addresses from publicly accessible sources, use programs to collect addresses on the web, and simply use dictionaries to make automated guesses at names and addresses. They then broadcast irrelevant and unwanted junk into our inboxes.

With the ever changing technologies, traditional forms of advertising are less effective so advertisers need to be more creative. Email marketing campaigns do work, but we are being increasingly bombarded with notifications we do not want.

So how do you sift the wheat from the chaff?

Email Service Providers (ESP’s) use 100’s of different metrics to stop these emails being delivered into your inbox. They include searching the content, valid and authorised emails accounts, open rates etc.

At present more than 95% of email messages sent worldwide is believed to be spam, making spam fighting tools increasingly important to all users of email.

What is the problem?

It is now increasingly difficult to get legitimate emails past these metrics and not into our spam folders. If your emails are mostly going into peoples spam folders a.) they do not hear your news, events, promotions, and are unable to engage with your organisation and b.) this can be serious trouble for you and can result in you being Blacklisted. This stops your emails from being delivered at all.
